Kirkwood 30317
(City of Atlanta, DeKalb county)
Kirkwood (established 1899) is one of Atlanta's oldest suburbs and is located between downtown Atlanta and downtown Decatur. In recent years, this neighborhood has experienced a dramatic resurgence. Many residents belong to the active Kirkwood Neighbors' Organization, which holds monthly meetings in a neighborhood church. Demand for homes in the area has skyrocketed in the past decade and prices have risen correspondingly. Kirkwood has some really wonderful architecture. Fine Victorian homes are sprinkled in among the predominant Craftsman bungalows, and many of these lovely homes have been restored or renovated. This neighborhood has also experienced a great deal of "infill" construction -- new homes (including new homes communities) being built on vacant lots or less desirable older homes being torn down to make way for new construction. Much of this infill construction has been thoughtfully designed to blend in with the historic character of the neighborhood and many of these homes are commanding top dollar prices.
New commercial development is taking place in the area as well. The Kirkwood business district is in the process of a radical transformation. Development is underway on Kirkwood Station along Hosea L. Williams Drive, a new multi-use development including retail and restaurants. The Kirkwood streetscape has also been recently revitalized with new sidewalks, street lights, and tree plantings. Another major new development recently opened at the intersection of Hosea L. Williams Boulevard and Moreland Avenue in the neighborhood Edgewood neighborhood. The Edgewood Retail District includes major national retailers (Target; Lowe's; Bed, Bath & Beyond; Barnes & Noble; Office Depot; Kroger; Petco) plus many other businesses and a number of restaurants as well as a residential component. In the opposite direction, the Oakhurst Village business district (about a mile east) also offers a growing variety of restaurants and shops.
Other nearby amenities include: Bessie Branham Park (an nice neighborhood park with tennis courts, a new playground, and a recreation center center); Coan Park (tennis courts, sports fields, recreation center, pavillion); the Charlie Yates Public Golf Course at East Lake (adjacent to the historic East Lake Golf Club -- home of the annual PGA Tour Championship); and the excellent East Lake Family YMCA -- which opened in 2001.
Children in Kirkwood attend City of Atlanta public schools (Toomer Elementary, Coan Middle, and Grady or Crim High School). Neighborhood residents are also eligible to send their children to the Charles R. Drew Charter School, an Edison Partnership school that focuses on reading and math, offers an extended day and extended school year, emphasizes technology, and promises a caring and committed staff of teachers. [More on Edison schools.]
Kirkwood and the surrounding neighborhoods are served by the East Lake and Edgewood/Candler Park MARTA rail stations. The neighborhood is also located on the PATH, a multi-use urban trail that is enormously popular with local cyclists, runners, walkers, and in-line skaters.
