Midtown 30308/30309
(City of Atlanta, Fulton county)
Midtown is one of Atlanta's hottest intown neighborhoods. Located north of Downtown and south of Buckhead, this neighborhood borders Piedmont Park and includes many of the city's premier arts venues, including the High Museum of Art, the Woodruff Arts Center (including Symphony Hall), the 14th Street Playhouse, and the Fabulous Fox Theatre.
Midtown architecture ranges from grand Victorian mansions to modest bungalows, many of which have been renovated to perfection and command very high prices. This neighborhood is also home to a large number of condominiums (both historic and new) as well as quite a few duplexes and other multi-family dwellings, many of which had been used as rooming houses during the periods when the neighborhood was not so popular and have since been renovated and converted to condos.
Certain streets within the neighborhood command a premium price. Myrtle, Argonne, and Penn are considered especially nice and the closer you get to Piedmont Park the more prices tend to go up. Parking is an ever-present issue in Midtown. Many of the homes -- even million dollar homes -- have parking via a shared drive or rear alley. Garages are somewhat rare, particularly 2-car garages, and there are many condos where no off-street parking is available.
The jewel of Midtown is Piedmont Park. It is Atlanta's largest park and the home of many festivals and special events throughout the year. Within the park you'll find the Atlanta Botanical Garden and the Piedmont Driving Club (a members only club). Amenities at the park include Lake Clara Meer, walking trails, a new dog park, and a playscape designed by Isamu Noguchi (which is better enjoyed as an artwork than a playground).
Midtown is also one of the liveliest gastronomic neighborhoods in the city. There are a wide variety of restaurants, cafes, pubs, and clubs scattered through the neighborhood. There's not as much in the way of quaint neighborhood shopping districts, but with 3 MARTA rail stations running through Midtown and a convenient shuttle to Atlantic Station just across I-75/85 as well as nearby shopping districts in Virginia-Highland, Downtown, and Buckhead, it's easy enough to satisfy your urge to splurge. The neighborhood does have some shopping, of course, including Midtown Promenade (Monroe Drive at Virginia Avenue), Amsterdam Walk (Monroe at Amsterdam), and the new Technology Square complex at Spring & Fifth Street.
Colony Square is located at the northern end of the neighborhood (Peachtree at 14th Street). It was Atlanta's first mixed use development back in the 1970s and is still going strong with hotel, condos, and office space in addition to retail and restaurants. Midtown Place is a newer development that includes a Whole Foods, Home Depot, Borders Books and more. It is located on Ponce de Leon Avenue across the street from City Hall East, which was originally the old Sears building, and is the site of a proposed new multi-use development. The land behind City Hall East is part of the proposed Beltline parkway that will hopefully stretch throughout the intown neighborhoods in the not-too-distant future.
Children living in Midtown who attend public school generally go to Morningside Elementary, Inman Middle School, and Grady High School. Grady is located adjacent to Piedmont Park and has a stadium and theatre that are sites of frequent community activities.
